What If Money Were No Object?

This is something I learned from a mentor who died before I was born.

Alan Watts, a British-American philosopher who moved to the US in 1938 and translated Eastern philosophy for the Western world. Before we discuss what I learned from Alan and how it moved and motivated me, I want to give you the opportunity of reading and hearing a couple passages from Alan directly.

In fact, these are the very same passages that helped inspire the creation of FollowFunding itself!

It’s the question posed by Mr. Watts: “What do I desire?” that got me thinking and drilling down to what I really wanted to do with my life.

MY ANSWER… is helping others escape the trap of doing the things they don’t want to do in order to simply exist. My team and I developed FollowFunding as a beacon of Freedom.

A platform that gets people thinking about what they actually want in life…

A platform giving their dreams a voice and direction.

A platform that connects that voice with the voices of others working in harmony to transform vision into reality.

FollowFunding is the KEY to unlocking my purpose by opening doors for others to realize theirs. Please comment below and let me know how Mr. Watt’s question impacted you. Listening to him had a profound impact on me, so I’m excited to hear what it sparked in you!

In case you were unable to watch the video here is the wisdom Alan Watts had to share:

“What do you desire? What makes you itch?

What sort of a situation would you like?

Let’s suppose, I do this often in vocational guidance of students, they come to me and say, well, “we’re getting out of college and we have the faintest idea what we want to do”.

So I always ask the question, “what would you like to do if money were no object? How would you really enjoy spending your life?”

Well, it’s so amazing as a result of our kind of educational system, crowds of students say well, we’d like to be painters, we’d like to be poets, we’d like to be writers, but as everybody knows you can’t earn any money that way.

Or another person says well, I’d like to live an out-of-doors life and ride horses. I said you want to teach in a riding school? Let’s go through with it. What do you want to do?

When we finally got down to something, which the individual says he really wants to do, I will say to him, you do that and forget the money, because, if you say that getting the money is the most important thing, you will spend your life completely wasting your time.

You’ll be doing things you don’t like doing in order to go on living, that is to go on doing things you don’t like doing, which is stupid.

Better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing than a long life spent in a miserable way. And after all, if you do really like what you’re doing, it doesn’t matter what it is, you can eventually turn it – you could eventually become a master of it. It’s the only way to become a master of something, to be really with it. And then you’ll be able to get a good fee for whatever it is.

So don’t worry too much. That’s everybody is – somebody is interested in everything, anything you can be interested in, you will find others will. But it’s absolutely stupid to spend your time doing things you don’t like, in order to go on spending things you don’t like, doing things you don’t like and to teach our children to follow in the same track.

See what we are doing, is we’re bringing up children and educating to live the same sort of lifes we are living. In order that they may justify themselves and find satisfaction in life by bringing up their children to bring up their children to do the same thing, so it’s all retch and no vomit.

It never gets there. And so, therefore, it’s so important to consider this question: What do I desire?”

  1. Eric,
I am excited about your vision and initiative here. Since hearing about followfunding and your unique approach, I haven’t been able to sleep. Coincidentally, I was already in reseach mode on crowdfunding, so I could not have found you at a better time.

I have two dreams that I will be seeking funding for. One is personal and has to do with launching a book which I have been writing for twenty years which is in Beta read mode right now. That book has a disruptive publishing twist which I have been waiting on the facilitating technology to make happen for years. It is now available and so I am ready to publish when the beta feedback is processed.

The other idea is an aha moment type of world-changing idea that you mentioned on your introductory video. This would turn all the existing paradigms of residential homeownership and the mortgage banking industry on their heads. How I would do that will remain proprietary for now, but this is another idea that I got nearly 20 years ago and I have been improving it ever since. To be done right and properly would require about 2 to 3 million dollars, and the first dreamscape I saw on your site was for $8M, so if that is doable, this certainly is. The scope and reach of this idea is mind-boggling and the benefits would reach to practically every family in America and the world (eventually) who have their own home with a mortgage and some mortgage equity

Thank you — I will be on the 4pm webinar today and so will my business partner.
